How To Clean A Stained Glass Window

  • www.howtocleanthings.com/surfaces/how-to-make clean-stained-glass/

  • Whichever route yous go, exist sure that you lot're not using a cleaner on painted glass. Stained and painted glass are different products. Oftentimes a clean soft brush, clean white cloth and some warm soap water are all you demand.

  • I practise stain glass fine art. Stain glass is merely colored glass and can exist cleaned the same as any other glass. However you will want to be sure what you utilise doesn't effect the solder. Most solder is either lead (if old) or zinc based. I would use a water/ammonia solution and put it on a fabric instead of spraying directly on the window. This gives you the all-time control of where the cleaner is going. If you need to get close to the solder I would use a Q-tip dipped in the cleaner. After cleaning I would rinse the window with plain h2o. Practiced luck.

  • Equal parts of warm water and vinagret

  • Get powdered whiting at the hardware store and a soft scrub brush. sprinkle the powdered whiting onto the glass that is laid on a apartment surface( to assist contain the mess if possible) and scrub gently. Brush away or vacuum away the excess . voila. shiny window.

    • @Carol westcott That is the absolute archival way to clean antique glass!!! Thank you for posting it for Kelley before I did. The just matter I can add is that the lightest Dry sheetrock mix is as well 'whiting'. This dry method keeps water from going into the channels.

  • I used seltzer water and 2 micro fibre cloths. Lightly moisten the first 1 so wipe the glass. Dry out with the other one you won't believe how nice your drinking glass comes out.

  • I recall your trouble is that these windows have metal (commonly lead) holding the pieces together so y'all do not want to utilize annihilation caustic. Nor would I utilise anything abrasive. I would just employ a warm damp fabric and wipe them down...which make have several wipes to get the grime off. When you get the crud off, just gently wipe downward with a warm wet cloth, doing a small area at a time and drying immediately with a soft dry cloth.

  • Vinegar and warm water 50/50 0ne damp non lint cloth and one to dry out.

  • My hobby is stained glass (copper foil, not leaded). I've ever simply quickly washed them with a fiddling Dawn & warm water and so quickly rinse and dry well. I apply a light coat of Turtle wax (yes, the car wax) and vitrify to a beautiful polish. I've been doing this for 10+ years with no problems whatsoever.

  • I accept several stained glass pieces that I made. They are the copper foil kind, simply I also made a leaded piece. To clean my pieces I mix a footling ammonia with water in a spray canteen. Spray the glass lightly with this then use a soft non shedding towel and wipe off. Then far has not harmed the copper foil or the leaded. Simply try not to become very much on the metal. Has always worked for me. I apply this mixture on all my glass, even ceramic that my husband fabricated.

  • If you are concerned about water getting into the spaces in-betwixt, keep your blow dryer on low and close past.

  • I use warm water and dawn with a very soft brush. And then rinse well and let drain.

  • Francesca has the answer if it is really old stained glass. If relatively new 1 quart of water plus one/2 teaspoon of Dawn plus 1 tablespoon of baking soda should do it.

  • Practice y'all have a photo? Could this be glass that is painted? Some old stained glass is actually painted, peculiarly if at that place is a scene and several colors in a unmarried piece of the drinking glass. That would be hard to clean and maintain.

    • @Carrie Militarist here is a pic...since its dark outside you lot cannot see all the pretty colors

Use Norwex cleaning cloths. They're a footling expensive but work not bad on whatsoever glass, and cuts your cleaning time in half. Very like shooting fish in a barrel too, simply dampen the one textile to wipe off dirt, and dry with the other. No glass cleaner or chemicals of any kind. They use them at our Antiquarian Mall to clean the glass cases and they piece of work bully. They sell them on Amazon, and on their site, Norwex.com.

  • Try using Sudsy Amonia and rinse. I use eukanuba war, the not buffing kind. Wipe on, let dry out. Wipe off until the rag does non jave any black oxidation on it. Practice Not press difficult.

  • I've fabricated stained glass, likewise (a great and satisfying craft!). When cleaning whatsoever that is made with the copper foil method, care should exist taken to not pull loose whatever of the solder lines where the adhesive on the copper foil is non stuck down well. The solder lines are sort of like the gums, holding in the teeth (glass). You lot want to clean the teeth while existence careful not to damage the gums! I just use window cleaner on modernistic stained glass. A microfiber fabric is nice, to avoid leaving lint. Treating the solder lines with care is the real challenge.

  • To avoid impairment utilise soft brushe with waterand soap and vinegar ,keep in mind amonia is hard on metal

  • As long equally information technology is real stained drinking glass & non painted glass - utilise rubbing alcohol and an old t-shirt. cascade a lilliputian alcohol on the glass & wipe the the cloth. I utilize it on my stained drinking glass projects & it works dandy. May have to exercise it a few times depending on the amount of grim and normally does not exit streaks.

  • Thank you everyone...LOTS of choices...I'm not certain if real stained glass or not...it was purchased at an sale and I was told that information technology came out of an one-time church building.

  • That is a cute window. Don't recall it's painted. Yous probably demand to take some of the advice y'all received here. Merely problem might be affecting the metal. I call up information technology'due south probably zinc. That'southward what well-nigh stained drinking glass is made with.

  • I venture to say that the window has camming and are not foiled edges. If in that location is dirt on the edges of the sections, merely use a soft brush around the sections before cleaning the section itself. Came is soft and tin scar if hit or scratched. Lots of work to clean each section, merely it is the best way. I retrieve Christine's use of alcohol or J.B.Kelly's cleaning solution works best.

  • I worked with a professional person window washer several years ago. When he had a chore that involved stained drinking glass windows, he used double-aught (00) steel wool. Information technology is nigh every bit soft & thin as human hair simply is very mildly abrasive. Y'all should wear gloves & piece of work outdoors, if possible. The wool will "shed" while working with it. Simply lightly rub the camming & the glass - information technology volition non scratch the drinking glass. You can test a pocket-sized expanse starting time, if you are unsure. Once you clean it completely with the steel wool, utilise a soft brush (paintbrush works best) to grit the entire window. Believe me, it will look astonishing when you are finished. I use this technique to make clean the glass in my front door all the time.

  • Now that you've included a movie, I meet that you have a camed window that has been painted. Please listen to Francesca, above! Either follow the instructions in the link she provided, or get a pro to do information technology. (I do not advise the steel wool, either. That'due south fine for stained glass, just yours is also painted.) Personally, I'd be afraid to exercise it myself. It's a beautiful window, and the pigment is a very important feature.

  • IF you decide to use steel wool, please use the 0000 not the 00. I use this on my car windshield to get the bugs off and I know it does not scratch the glass at all. I learned that trick from an motorcar detailer :)

  • I make stained glass panels, the BEST fashion to clean them is to use auto wax. It will clean and protect at the same time!

  • Te but affair I know near them is that the came near likely has a high concentration of lead in information technology and information technology will be very fragile. The drinking glass is probably brittle.

I am a pb lighter from Commonwealth of australia. NEVER apply whatever sort of soap or window cleaner, launder merely with damp cloth rinsed in clean h2o, dry out with old towel use a black shoe brush and go over whole window which polishes the atomic number 82 cames and makes the glass sparkle, it also gets into all the little corners and makes everything sparkle. Whatever sort of cleaner or soap breaks downward the putty around each slice of glass which keeps it water proof and keeps your window from warping. All-time of luck, LYNNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That is the best matter I wash my all the time

What did yous cease upwards using? Has it held up well since?

    • Well I didn't! Really made me nervous lol and so information technology's still sitting in my window
